July 26 - Prayer Life of Jesus 3

Now during those days he went out to the mountain to pray; and he spent the night in prayer to God. And when day came, he called his disciples and chose twelve of them, whom he also named apostles.
~Luke 6:12-13

How did Jesus do this? A whole night in prayer?
That’s like running a spiritual marathon!
Before we get overwhelmed by the thought of doing that (are you kidding? Me? All night???), we need to recognize that it would be foolish for a beginning runner to attempt a marathon.
Jesus had been developing his relationship to the Father in prayer over the years, and that laid the foundation for His ability to do this. And remember, Jesus saw prayer as conversation with His Father.
I have on several occasions had long late night, even all night, conversations with friends. So, since God calls me his friend, why not occasionally with Him?

And why did Jesus do this all night marathon prayer session? He had a critical decision to make... the choosing of the twelve persons to whom He would entrust the future of His Kingdom after His death and departure (ascension). Such a major decision required a major time of conversation with the Father, making sure He got it right!
We tend (even in important decisions) to first make our plans, then shoot up a quick prayer asking God to bless what we've decided.

Maybe we have it backwards. Maybe we should, like Jesus, start with the praying, and keep praying until we know we have the mind of our Father on the issue.
