July 31 - Prayer Life of Jesus 7

At that same hour Jesus rejoiced in the Holy Spirit and said, “I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and the intelligent and have revealed them to infants; yes, Father, for such was your gracious will. ~Luke 10:21

Laughing Jesus.sized

We usually think that prayer is a serious thing; no laughing matter. Yet Jesus sometimes laughed when He prayed. Here is such a time. When it says that Jesus rejoiced in the Holy Spirit, it means that Jesus was laughing out loud with a deep, divine laughter!

Why was Jesus laughing?
First, because God's Kingdom was spreading. He had sent out His disciples two by two, and they had preached the Good News, healed the sick, and cast out the forces of evil. The Kingdom was coming; not just through Jesus, but through Jesus’ disciples!
(And, by the way, it still is!).

And second, Jesus was just happy for His disciples. They were “getting it!” The Father was revealing His grace and glory to them, and that was changing their lives. They had experienced the joy of spiritual victory over the forces of evil. He rejoiced at their victory!

I am trying to think of the last time I laughed out loud as I was praying. When I did, was my joy because of something God had done for me, or was it rejoicing because I saw God’s kingdom being established, or maybe because of the spiritual victory of someone else?

David once prayed that he would be able to rejoice at the success of another. In Psalm 20:4-5 he prays, May God grant you your heart’s desire, and fulfill all your plans. May we shout for joy over your victory, and in the name of our God set up our banners.
Like David, Jesus prayed for the success of others, and rejoiced when He saw that coming to pass.

How much of my prayer life is, well, selfish? You know, the “God bless me and mine” category of praying. While I need to lift my personal and family concerns to God in prayer, my prayer life should go far beyond that.
Like Jesus, I need to pray for the success of His Kingdom and His servants, and then rejoice in the Spirit when I see it come to pass!
