Day 1 - Philippians 1:1

Phil - Banner

Paul and Timothy, slaves of Christ Jesus: To all the saints in Christ Jesus who are in Philippi, including the overseers and deacons.
                                                                                        ~Philippians 1:1

I am amazed at the insights into the Church in just this first verse

  • Paul wrote the letter, but says its from Paul and Timothy, showing the church’s corporate leadership (partnership, vs. 5&7) from his very first words.
  • Paul and Timothy are slaves of Christ Jesus! Most translations use servants rather than slaves, to avoid the negative connotations of slavery, but slaves has the truer meaning here. We belong to Christ Jesus as His purchased slaves, as Paul reminds in 1 Corinthians 6:20, you were bought at a price.
  • Note the order of the Name of our Master… it's Christ Jesus. It is not Jesus Christ. A reminder that Christ is not Jesus’ last name, but His title, and a reminder that this One is first God’s Anointed One, then also our Incarnated Friend. As always, the divine comes before the human.
  • The Christians are both slaves and saints. What a contrast!
We are slaves (a low title!), but set apart as God’s chosen people (a high privilege!). This gives us both a sense of humility and at the same time a sense of dignity
  • Though all are saints by position, some are called to leadership by function; there are overseers and deacons recognized in this Church, who need to be faithful to their calling, and who need to be recognized and supported by the other saints in the church.

And all of this is in the first verse!
